Description
Introduction Previous literature has explored the challenges experienced by newly qualified occupational therapists (NQOTs) as they move into practice (Tryssenaar and Perkins 2001, Rugg 2003, Hodgetts et al 2007, Lloyd et al 2007). Morley (2007) reported a preceptorship programme to ease these challenges by seeking to support NQOTs during the transition, in order to facilitate the development of clinical skills and professional behaviour and to promote reflective practice. The programme incorporated sessions of observed practice and joint reflection and linked development to the National Health Service (NHS) Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) (Department of Health 2004) and pay progression. It was launched at workshops in Autumn 2005, with participants from nine London mental health trusts and 16 organisations with whom these trusts shared rotations. The results of a questionnaire-based survey conducted with 45 of the 74 newly qualified practitioners who were embarking on the preceptorship programme indicated that the respondents had high expectations of professional supervision and limited access to co-working with senior colleagues (Morley et al 2007). The structured, developmental approach of preceptorship was anticipated to boost personal and professional confidence and clinical competence.
